4 But the word of the Lord came to him, “This man shall not be your heir; no one but your very own issue shall be your heir.”

5 He brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven and count the stars, if you are able to count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your descendants be.”

Prayer Focus: Have you ever tried to count the stars? Even just as dusk falls and the first few stars appear, it is a daunting task. Think about being out in the middle of the night in a place unpolluted by commercial light and looking up into the heavens. It would be overwhelming. That is what the Lord promises here – not just one descendant; not a substitute descendant; but more descendants than the stars. As we said a few weeks ago, “Wow!” Pray for that kind of ability to see beyond what you might expect or even imagine.
