A Unity Presbyterian Church Tartan
In honor of Unity Presbyterian Church’s 235th Anniversary a classic Scottish Tartan was designed and registered with the Scottish Register of Tartans. Unity’s roots run very deep, and much deeper than the 235 years we have thrived since our formation on March 18, 1788. The roots of those brave souls who founded Unity can be traced back up the Great Wagon Road to early Pennsylvania settlers who were direct descendants of Scots and Scots-Irish where the Presbyterian faith was originally formed.
Unity’s tartan is comprised of our previously approved brand colors of blues, grays, and maroon. Gold was added to give a celestial quality to the palette. The colors and design of the tartan tell Unity’s story over the past 235 years.
The double gold lines represent the path, or the way, that we have all found ourselves on as congregants of this church; whether the Great Wagon Road that brought our founders to this area, major highways we have taken to relocate to this place, or the path we have used to find God. The blue background represents the lakes, streams, and Catawba River that made this area a hospitable location for the settlers who founded our church. The gray threads represent the ashes from three fires that decimated former Unity sanctuaries. These events may have damaged a building, but the Church was built back stronger each time. The three double lines represent the Holy Trinity of our Christian doctrine: the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. The cross section of the gold represents the Cross that our Lord and Savior died upon so that we may have everlasting life. The maroon color represents the blood of Christ that he shed for all of humankind.
