Scripture – Luke 15:28-30
28 Then he became angry and refused to go in. His father came out and began to plead with him. 29 But he answered his father, ‘Listen! For all these years I have been working like a slave for you, and I have never disobeyed your command, yet you have never given me even a young goat so that I might celebrate with my friends. 30 But when this son of yours came back, who has devoured your assets with prostitutes, you killed the fatted calf for him!’
Prayer Focus: Just as the father went out into the street to meet his younger son, the father now leaves the party to go out to his elder son. The elder son responds by claiming that he has been a “slave” (isn’t that what the younger son thought he wanted?) and he has never even been given a goat for a small gathering with his friends. But remember, in the first verses of this story, the father has already given the elder son his inheritance. If anyone has been stingy about the goats, it’s not the father. It seems that both of these sons have defined their relationship with their father solely on what material things their father can give to them. As you consider your pledge of time, talents, and treasures that you will bring to worship tomorrow, remember the greatest gift is not merely transactional. The greatest gifts emerge from that transformation of our relationships and our hearts.
