Scripture – Lamentations 3:19 – The thought of my affliction and my homelessness is wormwood and gall! 

Prayer Focus: The book of Lamentations is a writing of great loss.  It captures, in words, the sorrow of the loss of the temple and most of Jerusalem during the Babylonian destruction in 587 BCE.  The Message translation of this text says, “I’ll never forget the trouble, the utter lostness, the taste of ashes, the poison I’ve swallowed.”  This is a visceral description of the depths of the loss the writer has experienced.  To lament means expressing grief and sorrow.  We begin with the deep lamentations of this text this week because lamenting is an acknowledgement that something is not the way it should be.  We cannot begin to look up in hope until we lament the things around us that are not as they should be.  Pray this week that we all might meet one another in our lamentations as we explore this text together.
