46 Three days later they found Jesus sitting in the temple, listening to the teachers and asking them questions. 47 Everyone who heard him was surprised at how much he knew and at the answers he gave.

Prayer Focus: On Sunday, September 21, our worship at both services will be led by the children of Unity in our first Children’s Sabbath service. Our pastors remind the children each Sunday that “Worship is always better when you are here and a part of it.” Why do we believe that? Scripture is full of reminders that worship is the work of the entire community, all ages praising God together. There are several stories of Jesus engaging with children that remind us that church is to be a community that includes children. This scripture is the only story we have of Jesus as a child, other than his birth.

David M Csinos in his book, a gospel for ALL AGES says, “I can imagine that Jesus and the religious leaders of that day engaged in what religious education scholar Anne Lockhart-Gilroy has called ‘bi-directional mentoring,’ a posture that acknowledges that young people and adults share knowledge with one another. We might be quick to say it was his divinity that allowed tween-age Jesus to amaze religious teachers with his wisdom, but the text gives little indication of this. Perhaps Jesus, that fully human child, was demonstrating that young people have much to offer the faith community.” Pray that we might all be open to what God has to say to us through our children this Sunday
