Scripture – Luke 20:34-36
34 Jesus said to them, “Those who belong to this age marry and are given in marriage,
35 but those who are considered worthy of a place in that age and in the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage.
36 Indeed, they cannot die anymore, because they are like angels and are children of God, being children of the resurrection.
Prayer Focus: Jesus does not answer their question (in fact Jesus is pretty good at not answering questions). Instead, he talks about the resurrection being beyond our normal expectations and understandings. He’s not talking about marriage; he’s talking about a new life in which no one dies for they are children of the resurrection. Now, please don’t read this and then send me an email asking if you’ll know your spouse or still be married to your spouse in heaven. I think you will, and I also think that’s not Jesus’ real concern here. He’s moving us beyond categories that limit and inviting us to see resurrection as an entirely new way of life together. Pray for eyes to see and the wonder to imagine what that might be.
