Scripture – Luke 17:19

Then he said to him, “Get up and go on your way; your faith has made you well.”

Prayer Focus: After Jesus expresses some surprise at the Samaritan’s identity and the failure of the other men to offer praise, he tells the Samaritan that his faith has made him “well.” The Greek term translated as “made well” is sozo which means to save, rescue or deliver. In contrast, the Greek word used to describe the initial healing of the men, katharizo, means to cleanse or purify. While all the men have been healed of their skin condition, only one, the Samaritan, has been saved. Only this outsider, who laid face down on the ground before Jesus, was able to see what the other men were too distracted to notice. It is in this act of faithful worship that the Samaritan joins other outsiders in Luke’s gospel whose lives have been transformed by Christ. As we gather together for worship today, may we be open to the ways that we will learn how to worship from one another, even from those we may not agree with or understand. Give thanks that we follow a savior who calls us to cross boundaries that divide us and learn from those we foolishly classify as outsiders.
