Scripture – Luke 17:16b-18

And he was a Samaritan. Then Jesus asked, “Were not ten made clean? So where are the other nine? Did none of them return to give glory to God except this foreigner?” 

Prayer Focus: We have now reached the climax of the story, in which Luke reveals an unexpected plot twist: the grateful man is a Samaritan. I can’t help but wonder if Luke purposely left this small but important detail out until after the Samaritan demonstrated his faithfulness. Would Luke’s audience have continued to listen to the story otherwise? Samaritans and Israelites despised one another and disagreed on virtually every issue that mattered. In typical Luke fashion, it is one of these excluded, condemned outsiders who serve as an example of faithfulness. Through the Samaritans act of gratitude, we learn what it looks like to faithfully worship God. Today, offer a prayer of gratitude to God for all of those people who we disagree with, don’t like, or don’t understand. May we be reminded that God so often calls us to learn from those we would rather ignore or leave out, like this grateful Samaritan.
