Scripture – Luke 20:27-28

27 Some Sadducees, those who say there is no resurrection, came to him

28 and asked him a question: “Teacher, Moses wrote for us that if a man’s brother dies leaving a wife but no children, the man shall marry the widow and raise up children for his brother.

Prayer Focus: The preaching text for this coming Sunday comes from Luke 20 as Jesus is engaged in a series of debates with the religious leaders in Jerusalem during the final week of his earthly life. In this text it is the Sadducees, who say there is no resurrection, who come to him with a question about Levirate marriage. As widows without children were some of the most vulnerable members of society, the Torah provided a way to care for them through marriage to the husband’s brother. This may seem quite strange to us today, but the law is intended to both care for the widow and to keep any family property in the family. How will you care for one of the most vulnerable in society today? Pray for those who, through no fault of their own, find themselves alone and at risk.
