4 Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me.
Prayer Focus: We do not use the word “abide” very often anymore. Here it is four times in this one verse – and it will appear several more times in the verses ahead for this week. To abide is to remain, to set up permanent residence, to come home at the end of the day with no intention of going out again that night. Perhaps it feels like you have been abiding at home a little too much during this pandemic. And yet, Jesus uses this word to remind of us of the source of our growth as Christians. We do not grow as we jump from place to place, from this new idea to that one. We grow as we find ourselves rooted in Christ, abiding in Christ. Pray that you might abide in Christ today and bear fruit for the kingdom.
