3 “Why do we fast, but you do not see?
    Why humble ourselves, but you do not notice?”
Look, you serve your own interest on your fast day
    and oppress all your workers.

4 You fast only to quarrel and to fight
    and to strike with a wicked fist.
Such fasting as you do today
    will not make your voice heard on high.

Prayer Focus: It appears that God’s people have been engaged in the practice of fasting, but their actual practice does not make their voice heard in heaven. They ask why and the Lord gives them an answer – their fasting is self-interested, it is oppressive, and it leads to conflict and violence. Do you find yourself irritable when “fasting?” Do you find your attention focused on what you’re lacking? Pray that your saying no, might direct your attention to God and God’s ways.
