Scripture- Acts 1:10-11

10 While he was going and they were gazing up toward heaven, suddenly two men in white robes stood by them. 11 They said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand looking up toward heaven? This Jesus, who has been taken up from you into heaven, will come in the same way as you saw him go into heaven.”

Prayer Focus: It sounds like the disciples might have been a bit overwhelmed by Jesus’ instructions and his sudden disappearance into the clouds. Who can blame them! As they stare off into the sky, two men in white robes appear. Perhaps the same two holy messengers that Luke describes appearing at the tomb on Easter morning? The two men get the disciples attention and basically say “get to work!” How often do we find ourselves staring off into the sky, perhaps overwhelmed by the task Jesus has given us here and now? Commentator William Willamon notes that this verse cautions against our tendency to view the church as “a mere memorial society for a dead Jesus.” The work of discipleship is not accomplished by staring up into heaven at Jesus, waiting for him to take us with him. Rather, we have a job to do here and now. Today, let us pray that God may give us the strength and energy needed to do the work we have been called to.
