Scripture – 2 Thessalonians 1:9-10

9 These will suffer the punishment of eternal destruction, separated from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of his might,

10 when he comes to be glorified by his saints and to be marveled at on that day among all who have believed, because our testimony to you was believed.

Prayer Focus: The author of 2 Thessalonians uses apocalyptic language here to envision eternal punishment for some and on the other hand God’s glorification by saints who have believed. Who is the audience for this kind of apocalyptic prediction of punishment and glory? I suspect the audience is two-fold: first to those members of the church who are experiencing suffering so that they might hold onto their faith; and second to those who do not believe so they might choose faith and be spared eternal punishment. Do not get caught up in things like “Am I in or am I out?” or “Surely those people are out so let’s start discriminating against them now.” Pray that all might hear the word of the Lord and come to a saving faith. That is our hope and our prayer.
