32 it is the smallest of all the seeds, but when it has grown it is the greatest of shrubs and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and make nests in its branches.”

Prayer Focus: The mustard seed is called the smallest of seeds. Can you even tell when it has been planted in the soil? It almost disappears. And yet, in time, it grows. The parable does not indicate that the growth required any effort or intention by the one who plants it. But still it grows even beyond its expected shrub to become a tree. And note that the tree is not celebrated for the fruit that it produces. It is celebrated for the shelter and shade that it provides for the birds of the air. The kingdom of heaven is like this, it grows from the smallest seed into a tree that provides welcome and shelter for those who seek it.
