Scripture – Psalm 17:1-5

1 Hear a just cause, O Lord; attend to my cry;

    give ear to my prayer from lips free of deceit.

2 From you let my vindication come;

    let your eyes see the right.

3 If you try my heart, if you visit me by night,

    if you test me, you will find no wickedness in me;

    my mouth does not transgress.

4 As for what others do, by the word of your lips

    I have avoided the ways of the violent.

5 My steps have held fast to your paths;

    my feet have not slipped.

Prayer Focus: The psalmist begins this seventeenth psalm with a request that the Lord hear and judge a case. The psalmist believes that their life will pass a test indicating no wickedness, no departures from the path, and no slipping feet. I am not sure that I’m ready to offer up that request and, if I did, I am confident my life will fall short. So, is this psalm just aspirational? Or does it express a confidence we might actually achieve? Whether your prayer today is that God might judge you favorably or a prayer of confession for the ways you fall short, lift up your prayer to the God who will hear and call you beloved.
