Scripture – Matthew 16:21-23

21 From that time on, Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and undergo great suffering at the hands of the elders and chief priests and scribes and be killed and on the third day be raised.

22 And Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, saying, “God forbid it, Lord! This must never happen to you.”

23 But he turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me, for you are setting your mind not on divine things but on human things.”

Prayer Focus: This Sunday will be the final Sunday before the Season of Lent. Traditionally, the church has reflected on one of the gospel accounts of Jesus’ Transfiguration on this Sunday and we’ll do so this year with the account from the Gospel of Matthew. Matthew places this story after a key moment in chapter 16 as Jesus asks the disciples who they say that he is. Peter responds that Jesus is the Messiah. From that time on, Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem, undergo great suffering, be killed, and on the third day be raised. This does not align with what Peter believes the Messiah will be, so he rebukes Jesus. Jesus rebukes him in return for setting his mind on human things. Keep this scene in mind as we climb the mountain with Jesus later this week. Pray that you might keep your mind on divine things instead of human things today.
