Sunday, January 24: Scripture – Jonah 3:10
10 When God saw what they did, how they turned from their evil ways, God changed his mind about the calamity that he had said he would bring upon them; and he did not do it.
Prayer Focus: God changed his mind. There are some theological traditions which claim this is impossible: God must have known the Ninevites would repent, so he never really intended to destroy the city after all. I believe God hears our prayers and God is moved by them. The risk and the danger of God’s wrath and displeasure is real – both in this life and in the life to come. And yet, God is on our side. God wants to act with mercy and grace. God demonstrates God’s great love for us in Jesus Christ. Pray that God might be moved today. Pray that the calamity might be lifted and a new day of faithfulness might dawn for our church, our community, our nation, and our world.
