Monday, January 18: Scripture – Jonah 3:1
1 The word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time,
Prayer Focus: Today we mark the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr. in our nation. King stood in the long tradition of prophets in scripture and the history of the church. This week in our daily devotions we will reflect on another prophet – Jonah. We join the story after Jonah has ignored the Lord’s call to go to Nineveh and instead ended up in the belly of a great fish. Jonah prays to the Lord and the fish spits him out onto the shore. God’s persistence continues as the word of the Lord comes to Jonah a second time. The Lord continues to speak and does not give up on us, especially speaking through prophets like Dr. King. As we consider the Lord’s persistent call, reflect and pray on this quote from Dr. King: “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, ‘What are you doing for others?’”
