Matthew 2:3-6—Magi
‘And you, Bethlehem, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah,’ Matthew 2:6a
The setting takes place in Jerusalem. King Herod, a secular ruler, lives in a palace; high priests and scribes perform rituals in the temple. Magi come to Jerusalem from the East and bring word that the king of the Jews has been born. The response from Herod, the Jewish leaders and all the people of Jerusalem is the same; they are frightened. Herod’s question: Where is the Messiah to be born? Answer: This ruler will come from Bethlehem and he is ‘to shepherd my people Israel’. The irony is not lost; we see this theme throughout the Bible. God chooses the most unlikely people and insignificant places to carry out His plans. Magi – Gentiles searching for the king of the Jews. Shepherd – the lowliest of occupations. Bethlehem – a small, insignificant town. A baby brought into the world in humble surroundings will be named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
What does this mean for us today? For me, it is a reminder that I do not have to occupy a governor’s mansion or be in the confines of a sanctuary to make a difference. I can share with others in everyday settings the prophecy of hope and love that was fulfilled when Christ was born – a message we so desperately need to hear right now. A message that proclaims that we all have a place at the manger.
Prayer: May my words and deeds with everyone I encounter be a reflection of Christ’s love and grace. In His name, Amen.
