Scripture – Matthew 18:34-35

34 “And in anger his lord handed him over to be tortured until he would pay his entire debt. 35 So my heavenly Father will also do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother or sister from your heart.”

Prayer Focus: The end of this story is dramatic. The hyperbolic torture here references back to the hyperbolic level of grace that was first offered by the king at the beginning. We may be shocked at the punishment, but the real shock value to Jesus’ listeners would have been the absurd initial mercy shown by the king. The listeners of the first century, as well as many of us, are used to a system of crime and punishment. The obscene level of grace the king first shows to the slave at the beginning, turns that system upside down to focus on forgiveness. Pray that we as the church might live in ways that share God’s great mercy and grace with everyone we meet.
