Scripture – Luke 15:17-19
17 But when he came to his senses he said, ‘How many of my father’s hired hands have bread enough and to spare, but here I am dying of hunger! 18 I will get up and go to my father, and I will say to him, “Father, I have sinned against heaven and before you; 19 I am no longer worthy to be called your son; treat me like one of your hired hands.” ’
Prayer Focus: The young man “comes to himself,” and remembers that the hired hands in his father’s house had plenty to eat. So, he hatches another scheme to return home, claim he has sinned, and ask to be treated like a servant instead of son. Some read this as genuine repentance, an attempt to turn his life around. Others suggest this young man’s heart has not changed and that he is still just trying to meet his bodily needs. Which seems most likely to you? Has he been “transformed?” When are you most likely to pray and ask God for what you need? In a moment of repentance or as a last resort when your need is great? As you pray today, seek to honestly evaluate your relationship with the goodness and mercy of God.
