Scripture – Joel 2:32
32 Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved, for in Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there shall be those who escape, as the Lord has said, and among the survivors shall be those whom the Lord calls.
Prayer Focus: When this verse is quoted in Acts 2, it stops after the first phrase: “Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.” But here in Joel, we discover that the verse continues. It promises that there will be those who escape and that the among the survivors “shall be those whom the Lord calls.” If we just read the portion of the verse quoted in Acts, it appears that salvation is completely up to us: call on the name of the Lord, say the right words, offer the golden ticket at the right moment and you will be saved. But Joel indicates something more – those who call on the name of the Lord do so in response to God’s call to us. Those who survive are called by the Lord. Our future depends not on our own efforts, but on God’s benevolent call of grace to us. Salvation rests in the hands of the Lord. Pray that you might respond with a Yes! as we celebrate being a church reformed and always being reformed by the word of God today.
