34 When the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together, 35 and one of them, an expert in the law, asked him a question to test him.

Prayer Focus: We shift this morning to the Gospel of Matthew and find Jesus in a debate with the religious leaders of Jerusalem. He has confounded the Sadducees, so the Pharisees decide they will start asking Jesus questions. But notice they ask Jesus a question to “test” him. This is not an inquiry designed to gather knowledge and potentially change their own minds. They ask the question in an attempt to trip up Jesus, to see if he’s willing to conform to what they already know to be true, to trap him into saying something wrong. Think about the questions you ask today. Are you intending to trap or to learn? Pray that your questions might deepen your relationships with others instead of creating division.
