27 He said to her, “Let the children be fed first, for it is not fair to take the children’s food and throw it to the dogs.”
28 But she answered him, “Sir, even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.”
Prayer Focus: When someone comes to Jesus asking for assistance, the response we expect is: “Why of course, I’m happy to help.” I think that’s why Jesus’ response to the woman’s request to heal her daughter is so uncomfortable. “Let the children be fed first, for it is not fair to take the children’s food and throw it to the dogs.” What? Not only does Jesus seem to deny her request, he insults her in the process. There is much more to be explored here than we can do in this brief devotional (you need to come to worship on Sunday!), so for now focus on the woman’s response: “Even the dogs under the table eat the children’s crumbs.” She takes Jesus’ metaphor and reorients it. There will be enough bread for both children and dogs. Pray for persistence in your prayers today. Pray that what appears to be an obstacle might be viewed from a new angle so that healing can occur.
