Hymn: Hear my Prayer
Prayer Focus: When I was a child, my mother and I had opportunity to hear De Gullah Singers, a group from the South Carolina Low Country. The group told stories and sang the music of their Gullah and West African culture. I can remember the sound as they sang African American spirituals, some that I was familiar with, and others I had never heard. The sound came from deep within and was beautiful in its imperfection. It was also joyful. So very joyful! Today we hear an original composition by the late Moses Hogan that was written in the style of an African American spiritual. Like so many spirituals, there is a joyful anticipation of being with God, where sin and sorrow are no more. May we too live our lives not in fear of death, but with the knowledge that we are “bound for glory.”
