Wednesday, March 16: Scripture – 1 John 3:4-6
4 Everyone who commits sin is guilty of lawlessness; sin is lawlessness.
5 You know that he was revealed to take away sins, and in him there is no sin.
6 No one who abides in him sins; no one who sins has either seen him or known him.
Prayer Focus: No one who abides in him sins; no one who sins has either seen him or known him. What can this mean? John knows that we continue to sin and that there is a remedy for that (see 1 John 2:1-2). What he is talking about here is the habit of sinning, the regular pattern of sinning that has been changed. John is insistent that abiding in Christ brings a transformation of one’s life. As NT Wright comments, “We are playing a different piece of music now, and even if our fingers slip sometimes and play some wrong notes, notes that belong to the music we used to play, that doesn’t mean we are going back to play that old music for real once more.” Pray that you will hear and play a new song today, the song that we only hear as we abide in Christ.
