Wednesday, June 28
Throughout the months of June and July, our daily devotions will be invitations to pray, perhaps in familiar ways and sometimes in new ways. This week as we prepare to celebrate communion in worship on July 2nd, we invite you to join us in praying some of our favorite mealtime prayers and if there is a story about why.
By Kathryn McGregor
“God our Father, God our Father, We thank you, We thank you, For our many blessings, for our many blessings, Amen, Amen. (Sung to the tune of “Are you Sleeping.”)
When I asked my children what their favorite mealtime blessing was from childhood, both my girls said this one. They learned it at preschool as two-year-olds and asked to sing it at home often. I love it because very young children can first learn it by repeating after the adult the way our pastors often pray with the children during worship. Soon, they can sing it all by themselves or you can sing it as a family. This prayer affirms that all our blessings, yes, EVERYTHING we have, is a gift from God. This includes the food we eat, our families and friends, and the opportunity to pray and worship freely. Pray this prayer at your next meal and be reminded of all God provides you on a daily basis.
