Wednesday, January 4: Scripture – Matthew 2:4-6
4 Calling together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, [Herod] inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born.
5 They told him, “In Bethlehem of Judea, for so it has been written by the prophet:
6 ‘And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, are by no means least among the rulers of Judah, for from you shall come a ruler who is to shepherd my people Israel.’”
Prayer Focus: King Herod recognizes that if magi from the east have come seeking a child who has been born King of the Jews, then this is no ordinary king. So he asks his advisors where the Messiah was to be born. The Messiah, the one anointed by God, the one who would lead the people into a new kingdom of faithfulness to God. And he learns that the Messiah is to be born in Bethlehem, a town just six miles away from Jerusalem. The most wonderful gifts might be close, but we fail to notice them. Pray for eyes to see the gifts of the Lord even in the most unexpected places.
