6 Now standing there were six stone water jars for the Jewish rites of purification, each holding twenty or thirty gallons. 7 Jesus said to them, “Fill the jars with water.” And they filled them up to the brim.
Prayer Focus: I am struck by two details in these verses. First, I am struck by the simplicity of Jesus’s command. Jesus instructs the servants to take the water jars that are used for common Jewish rites and fill them with water, a completely ordinary, unremarkable substance. Second, I am struck by the willingness of the servants to carry out these seemingly insignificant instructions. Not only do they fill up the jars, but they fill them up to the brim, serving as key players in Christ’s work. Today, let us pray that we may see the holiness in the mundane and sacredness in the ordinary. Let us pray that we may willingly fill our jars to the brim, trusting that Christ transforms ordinary people, resources, and actions into extraordinary gifts.
