20 Looking at his disciples, he said:
“Blessed are you who are poor,
for yours is the kingdom of God.
21 Blessed are you who hunger now,
for you will be satisfied.
Blessed are you who weep now,
for you will laugh.
Prayer Focus: There is a lot to unpack in these verses and we’ll seek to do more of that on Sunday in the sermon. But in brief, notice that “blessed” is in the present tense. This is not a hope for the future, but a declaration about the present. Also, the poor, the hungry, and the weeping are not spiritualized (for example to “poor in spirit”), so Jesus is speaking about physical and literal conditions of poverty, hunger, and despair. Pray that you might recognize the present conditions of affliction plaguing the world today. Could you be part of how God’s blessedness is shared?
