Scripture – Matthew 16:27-28

27 “For the Son of Man is to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay everyone for what has been done.

28 Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom.”

Prayer Focus: These verses contain a confusing promise that some “will not taste death” before they see the kingdom of God. Matthew, Mark, and Luke all record this saying by Jesus. Is this a prediction that the kingdom of God will come in fullness before the end of the disciples’ earthly life? If so, that did not happen. The Gospel writers all knew that to be the case. So, perhaps it is a reference to the new kingdom that Jesus’ inaugurates in his death and resurrection. That kingdom did come and continues to be present in our lives today so that we too can experience it here and now. Pray that you might see the kingdom of God at work in the world today, even when the evidence is hard to come by.
