Wednesday, April 2nd: Scripture – Psalm 131:1-2

1 O Lord, my heart is not lifted up;

    my eyes are not raised too high;

I do not occupy myself with things

    too great and too marvelous for me.

2 But I have calmed and quieted my soul,

    like a weaned child with its mother;

    my soul is like the weaned child that is with me.

Prayer Focus: Continuing our journey toward Jerusalem as we sing these psalms, we reach Psalm 131 this morning. It is a short psalm, just three verses. I get the sense that if we’ve been walking and singing these psalms, when we reach this one we pause for a moment as the journey has become long. Our hearts are heavy. Our eyes are cast down. Our soul is calmed and quieted. There are marvelous things ahead on this journey, but this psalm helps us to focus on today. Pray for a quiet heart and the ability to focus just on today.

“Psalm 131 is a maintenance psalm. It is functional to the person of faith as pruning is functional to the gardener: it gets rid of that which looks good to those who don’t know any better, and reduces the distance between our hearts and their roots in God.” Peterson, 143.
