Tuesday, September 28: Scripture – Isaiah 58:3-4

3 “Why do we fast, but you do not see? Why humble ourselves, but you do not notice?” Look, you serve your own interest on your fast day, and oppress all your workers.

4 Look, you fast only to quarrel and to fight and to strike with a wicked fist. Such fasting as you do today will not make your voice heard on high.

Prayer Focus: Isaiah helps the people identify that even the things they think they are doing right are in fact broken. The people claim to be fasting and the Lord is silent. But the prophet tells them their fasting is self-serving. It leads to oppression of the workers, quarreling, and fighting. The fast has been broken (and not by scrambled eggs and bacon). Pray that you might be open to hearing God’s correction even when you are sure that you are doing the right thing. Pray that you might be open to being repaired by the Lord.
