Tuesday, August 24: Scripture – Mark 7:3-4

3 (For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, do not eat unless they thoroughly wash their hands, thus observing the tradition of the elders;

4 and they do not eat anything from the market unless they wash it; and there are also many other traditions that they observe, the washing of cups, pots, and bronze kettles.)

Prayer Focus: I always appreciate when the gospel writers give us as readers a bit of extra information in case we do not know the original context. At least according to Mark, the Pharisees wash their hands, cups, pots, and bronze kettles because it is tradition. Think today about the things you do just because it is tradition, the way you’ve always done them, etc. There may be comfort in that, but is it life-giving? Pray that you might find your actions today life-giving for you and others. Pray also for that little bit of extra information you might need to really understand what is going on with someone else today.
