1 When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion,
we were like those who dream.
2 Then our mouth was filled with laughter
and our tongue with shouts of joy;
then it was said among the nations,
“The Lord has done great things for them.”
3 The Lord has done great things for us,
and we rejoiced.
Prayer Focus: The Sunday before Commitment Sunday in a stewardship campaign can be a heavy day that focuses on obligation and responsibility. “We all need to pitch in and do this giving thing together and it’s up to you to give a little more.” But that is not my intention for this coming Sunday. With the words of this psalm, the Sunday before Commitment Sunday is a day for joy. It’s a day to have our mouths filled with laughter and our tongues with shouts of joy. For the Lord has done great things for us! Pray that we might name the good gifts the Lord has given to us and rejoice!
“We laughed, we sang, we couldn’t believe our good fortune. That is the authentic Christian note, a sign of those who are on the way of salvation. Joy is characteristic of Christian pilgrimage.” Peterson, 89-90.
