Thursday, March 13th: Scripture – Psalm 123:1-2

1 To you I lift up my eyes,
O you who are enthroned in the heavens!

2 As the eyes of servants
look to the hand of their master,
as the eyes of a maid
to the hand of her mistress,
so our eyes look to the Lord our God,
until he has mercy upon us.

Prayer Focus: As we have sung these songs and prayed these prayers, we have lifted up our eyes to the Lord. The Lord is who we seek to see, for our help comes from the Lord. And as we see the Lord, we also begin to see and understand ourselves. In today’s verses we are reminded that the eyes lifted up to see the Lord are the eyes of servants. We lift up our eyes with the knowledge and expectation that God is both mysterious (enthroned in the heavens) and benevolent to us. As you seek to serve the Lord today, pray for this knowledge and expectation.

“We would very soon become contemptuous of a god whom we could figure out like a puzzle or learn to use like a tool. No, if God is worth our attention at all, God must be a God we can look up to – a God we must look up to.” Peterson, 57
