Thursday, March 10: Scripture – 1 John 2:12-14
12 I am writing to you, little children, because your sins are forgiven on account of his name.
13 I am writing to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I am writing to you, young people, because you have conquered the evil one.
14 I write to you, children, because you know the Father. I write to you, fathers, because you know him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young people, because you are strong and the word of God abides in you, and you have overcome the evil one.
Prayer Focus: This is an odd text in how repetitive it is. The authors are writing to the little children, the fathers, the young people, the children, then to the fathers and the young people again. The translators set it off in a poetic form instead of standard prose to help us see what John is doing here. It is almost as if we are meditating on the forgiveness of sins and the transformation of our life in Jesus Christ. To help you see how this might work, I invite you to take one of the verses and use it as a breath prayer today. For example, pray as you slowly breathe in “because your sins are forgiven,” and then pray as you slowly breathe out “on account of his name.” Repeat this several times as you seek not just to understand that your sins are forgiven, but to truly know the gift of forgiveness in Christ’s name.
