12 “If a member of your community, whether a Hebrew man or a Hebrew woman, is sold to you and works for you six years, in the seventh year you shall set that person free. 13 And when you send a male slave out from you a free person, you shall not send him out empty-handed. 14 Provide for him liberally out of your flock, your threshing floor, and your winepress, thus giving to him some of the bounty with which the Lord your God has blessed you. 15 Remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God redeemed you; for this reason I lay this command upon you today.

Prayer Focus: The writer of Deuteronomy (much longer conversation if it was indeed Moses or a later editor), envisions a time not only when individuals incur debts, but also a time when a fellow member of the community might be sold into a version of indentured service. This debt should also be released or canceled in the seventh year. Even more, care should be given to ensure that the now freed member of the community is provided for from the flock, the threshing floor, the winepress, and the bounty of the Lord. Have you considered not just providing enough for someone in need to get out of their immediate predicament, but enough for them to begin to thrive? Pray for a spirit of generosity toward your neighbor as generosity toward others tends our souls.
