26 If any think they are religious and do not bridle their tongues but deceive their hearts, their religion is worthless. 27 Religion that is pure and undefiled before God the Father is this: to care for orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself unstained by the world.
Prayer Focus: Remember that being a “doer of the word” is not just general moral action. In the context of these verses, it is specifically about the words that we speak. We might engage in all kinds of moral action, but if our tongues are not bridled so as to speak words of faith, hope, love, and joy, then our morality is worthless. That’s a pretty high standard. Pray that your tongue will speak in ways that lead to caring for orphans and widows in distress and following the way of the Lord today.
