Scripture – Matthew 20:13-16
13 But he replied to one of them, ‘Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did you not agree with me for a denarius? 14 Take what belongs to you and go; I choose to give to this last the same as I give to you. 15 Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or are you envious because I am generous?’ 16 So the last will be first, and the first will be last.”
Prayer Focus: The landowner hears the grumbling and reminds the laborers (whom he calls not worker but “Friend”) that they received exactly what they had agreed to that morning. He should be free to provide for the daily needs of whomever he wants. Do the day laborers believe they have a right to dictate how the landowner will use what is available to him? We all love grace as long as it applies to us and to those we deem to be worthy of it. Give thanks that the kingdom of heaven is marked by such undeserved grace as that is the only way we could ever possibly get in.
