Prayer Focus: This gospel hymn was written by Doris Mae Akers during her time as choir director of the Sky Pilot Radio Church in Los Angeles in 1962. The interracial choir often prayed together before the service, but that particular morning the choir prayed with such faith and vigor that finally Akers had to tell them, “I hate to leave this room and I know you hate to leave, but you know we do have to go to the service. But there is such a sweet, sweet Spirit in this place.” The phrase started singing to her and when it returned the next morning she went to her piano and wrote this song. As we prepare this morning to sing, “There’s a Sweet, Sweet Spirit,” hear Doris Akers herself lead a choir in this inspiring hymn.
