Music – The Chorister’s Prayer – Philip Stopford

Prayer Focus: The Chorister’s Prayer first appeared in The Choirboy’s Pocket Book, published by the Royal School of Church Music in England in 1934.

Bless, O Lord, us thy servants who minister in thy temple; Grant that what we sing with our lips, we may believe in our hearts, and what we believe in our hearts we may show forth in our lives; Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Even though these words are frequently prayed by choirs, I think the prayer is for us all. It is certainly my prayer each Sunday when we sing hymns together that the words speak to each worshiper, because what we sing has the power to transform. I keep a sign near my desk of a quote from Tom Trenney, the Minister of Music of First Plymouth Church in Lincoln, Nebraska: “We don’t make music in worship to make beautiful music. We make music in worship to make beautiful people…to make people compassionate, loving, hopeful, and faithful.” Amen, and Amen!
