Prayer Focus: This is a verse that we often get tripped up on. All scripture is inspired by God and is useful for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness. Some will argue this is a verse for the inerrancy or infallibility of scripture – saying that there are no errors in scripture and everything we need to completely understand God’s will is contained within these words. If that were Paul’s intent, then we should only read the Old Testament as those were the only “scriptures” available to both Paul and to Timothy. But we can understand all scripture to be inspired by God in that it, both Old and New Testaments, lead us to Jesus. Even in the places we do not understand or the cultural practices which appear to be contrary to God’s will for us today, we might be instructed and trained for righteousness. Pray for the wisdom to read and to hear God speak to you through the scriptures today.
