Saturday, March 29th: Scripture – Psalm 129:5-8

5 May all who hate Zion

be put to shame and turned backward.

6 Let them be like the grass on the housetops

that withers before it grows up,

7 with which reapers do not fill their hands

or binders of sheaves their arms,

8 while those who pass by do not say,

“The blessing of the Lord be upon you!

We bless you in the name of the Lord!”

Prayer Focus: Those who hate Zion find their harvest either impossible to gather or a failure. The wicked will not ultimately prosper. That is sometimes hard to imagine, as those without moral qualms often seem to be at the top of the economic and political system. The psalm gives us words to express our frustration at this turn of events. “May all who hate Zion be put to shame and turned backward.” This journey remains long and frustration sometimes comes. Give thanks to God for even the words to express our frustration on this journey.

“The psalms are not sung by perfect pilgrims. The pilgrims of old made their mistakes, just as we make ours. Perseverance does not mean perfection. It means that we keep going. We do not quick when we find that we are not yet mature and there is a long journey still before us.” Peterson, 125.
