Saturday, August 27: Scripture – Luke 14:12
12 He said also to the one who had invited him, “When you give a luncheon or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers and sisters or your relatives or rich neighbors, in case they may invite you in return, and you would be repaid.
Prayer Focus: Jesus shifts focus now and speaks to the host instead of to the guests. He warns the hosts not to invite friends, family, or rich neighbors in the expectation that you will be invited to their house for a luncheon as well. Creating a system of expectation and “I’ll scratch your back if you scratch mine,” is ripe for corruption. We should definitely invite our friends, families, and neighbors to eat with us. But do it as a gift, not to create a debt you hope will be repaid.
