Scripture – Luke 21:5-6
5 When some were speaking about the temple, how it was adorned with beautiful stones and gifts dedicated to God, he said,
6 “As for these things that you see, the days will come when not one stone will be left upon another; all will be thrown down.”
Prayer Focus: We continue this week with the Gospel of Luke and Jesus during the final week of his earthly life. The lectionary usually brings us texts such as this as we get close to Advent to remind us that Advent is not only the expectation of Christ’s birth in Bethlehem more than 2000 years ago. We continue to expect Jesus’ return or “Advent,” to set the world right and reveal God’s kingdom in all its fullness and glory. Here in this text, we find Jesus talking with some about the temple – intended to be a beautiful and wonderful meeting place for God and God’s people. And yet Jesus is not impressed. He declares that the days will come when the temple will be utterly destroyed. This literally comes to pass in the destruction of Jerusalem by the Romans in 70 AD. It figuratively happens as Jesus, fully human and fully God – the meeting place of God and God’s people, gives his life over to death on the cross. Pray that you might not be distracted by beautiful stones and pretty things in this life. Pray that you might keep your eyes on Jesus this week.
