1 No sooner had Boaz gone up to the gate and sat down there than the next-of-kin, of whom Boaz had spoken, came passing by. So Boaz said, “Come over, friend; sit down here.” And he went over and sat down.
2 Then Boaz took ten men of the elders of the city, and said, “Sit down here”; so they sat down.
Prayer Focus: This week we join the story of Ruth and Boaz in its final chapter. Ruth is a foreigner from Moab who has come to the land of Israel with her mother-in-law Naomi after the death of her husband. Naomi is also a widow and the prospects of widows in this time were bleak. However, Boaz, a relative of Naomi’s deceased husband, has now decided to redeem the family land and Ruth. However, he is not first in line to do so. Over the next several days we will hear of the legal process for redemption at the city gate. While this is certainly not the system we would or should use today, I do encourage you to ask how you care for those who find themselves alone. To use the language of scripture, how are you caring for the widows, orphans, and strangers? Pray that you might see a new way to care for one in need today.
