Monday, May 23: Scripture – Acts 16:16-18
16 One day, as we were going to the place of prayer, we met a slave-girl who had a spirit of divination and brought her owners a great deal of money by fortune-telling. 1
7 While she followed Paul and us, she would cry out, “These men are slaves of the Most High God, who proclaim to you a way of salvation.”
18 She kept doing this for many days. But Paul, very much annoyed, turned and said to the spirit, “I order you in the name of Jesus Christ to come out of her.” And it came out that very hour.
Prayer Focus: We began our devotions for the season of Easter with a text from the Acts of the Apostles about the apostles in prison and we end this season with another text from Acts and prison is on the horizon once again. The source of their imprisonment begins with Paul being annoyed when a slave-girl kept following them around declaring, “These men are slaves of the Most High God, who proclaim to you a way of salvation.” I am not sure why Paul got so annoyed by this as their proclamation of the gospel was not a secret. And yet Paul gets so annoyed that he heals the girl. Healing someone by casting out a spirit is not typically how I react when I am annoyed. All of us are annoyed from time to time, and often with good reason. Pray for how you will react to the things and people that annoy you today. Pray that your reaction might be to set someone free.
