Monday, March 7: Scripture – 1 John 2:1-2
1 My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous;
2 and he is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.
Prayer Focus: As we continue with our Stewardship theme “Love in Truth and Action,” 1 John begins to talk about a very concrete example – forgiveness. Sometimes those outside the church will criticize the forgiveness of sins with a statement like, “it doesn’t matter what you do, just ask for forgiveness and go on sinning.” The author of 1 John reminds his readers that the point is not to keep on sinning. Because God first loved us, we want to live a life of faithfulness and obedience. But sin continues to linger and we continue to fall short. If we and when we do sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ, who is the atoning sacrifice. Not just for us but also for the sins of the whole world – even the one who is so skeptical of forgiveness! Pray for those who refuse to accept the forgiveness of their sins today. Pray that they might know the joy of a new life in Christ.
