3 If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities,
Lord, who could stand?
4 But there is forgiveness with you,
so that you may be revered.
5 I wait for the Lord; my soul waits,
and in his word I hope;
6 my soul waits for the Lord
more than those who watch for the morning,
more than those who watch for the morning.
Prayer Focus: Yesterday, we noted the psalmist sings to the Lord from “the depths,” There are moments in life when we find ourselves in the depths through no fault of our own. There are also moments when we find ourselves in the depths entirely through our own actions, decisions, words, or indecisions. If the Lord marked iniquities, none of us could stand. But we lift up our voice because we know that there is forgiveness with the Lord. We are assured of forgiveness even before we make our confession. Pray for the assurance of forgiveness today, and then for the ability to actually forgive yourself. God forgives you!
“The words wait and hope are connected with the image of watchman waiting through the night for the dawn. The connection provides important insights for the person in trouble who cries out, ‘But surely there is something for me to do!’ The answer is yes, there is something for you to do, or more exactly there is something you can be: be a watchman” Peterson, 136.
